Been around the World...
MBCC is concerned with events around the world and how our small community effectively and compassionately participates in the healing that needs to take place in so many places. While we have great hopes to be directly connected with more international efforts of healing and peace, at this point in our life we offer most of our support by giving to the work of our denomination, the Presbyterian Church (USA). Still, below are some of the ways we try to be directly connected.

MBCC's Tammie and Ricky Choi travel to North Korea and China . . .

June 13, 2006

Dear Friends and Family,

Exactly two years ago we stood near the Chinese-North Korean border looking over rolling hills, the sparkling blue Tumen River, and a deserted but guarded bridge connecting the two countries. Escorted by a Chinese soldier, we started to cross that bridge and then were stopped at midpoint by a red, three-inch-wide, painted line that divided North Korea from the rest of the world. There we prayed for peace and reconciliation and hoped for another chance to come back and cross to the other side. Now two years later, having recently celebrated one year of marriage, we face that bridge once again. We are a little older, a bit wiser, and hopefully, with God's blessing, more prepared.

This August and September we will be on a two part trip to this region to learn more about North Korea and lend support to local efforts. As advocates for children, as professionals in medicine and public health, as Christians, as warriors for social justice, and as Korean-Americans we feel a deep and personal obligation to add our efforts in this troubled country. Despite the complex local and international political situation, the medical and public health imperatives are clear: basic medical and preventive measures are in short supply. We will be in Pyongyang, North Korea from August 8-19 then at the North Korea/China border from August 21 to September 8. During the second leg we will volunteer with an organization called C.R.A.M (Christ Reaching Asia Mission Worldwide, a 501(c)(3) organization) and seek to gain entry into North Korea again to volunteer at their new orphanage, kindergarten and medical clinics. Ricky will provide some support for children?s health services and Tammie will be leading sessions on caring for children with disabilities and training local child care workers. We will be listening, learning, and praying.

Hoping to connect many more people to the experience, we are collecting donations for CRAM. If you are interested in offering your support, tax deductible donations can be made directly to CRAM or to us and we will purchase School and health supplies for children and schools in China. Donations are tax deductible.

Most importantly, we would ask for your continued prayers, encouraging thoughts, mindfulness of the need in North Korea. We want to thank you for your friendship and shared passion in making a difference. Thank you especially for your thoughts and prayers. We look forward to sharing with you about our journey on our return.

In peace, solidarity, and above all love,

Ricky and Tammie Choi
